Dr. Chong Yew Yoong is the holder of the DMA, M.Mus and BFA (Hons) degrees. He also holds the Dip (HKAPA), ATCL, LTCL and LGSM diplomas. He received his music education in the USA and Hong Kong. He also studied in England, Italy, Hungary and Canada.
His awards include the Elizabeth Hamner Award. He has been the adjudicator of the HSBC International Competition, HKYPA Music Competition (Hong Kong), ASWARA International Piano Competition and 1st International Classical Piano and Vocal Competition. As a performer, he has been featured in the USA on PBS-TV “Pianist At Work” and in the Philippines on PTV-4 “Paco Park Presents”. He has also worked with the Brodsky Quartet, Anita Mui, Lydia Shum and Siti Nurhaliza. He has been principal cellist in the Venice Symphony Orchestra, Southern Illinois Symphony, Penang Symphony Orchestra. Besides that, Dr. Chong has also been involved in the release of the CDs of “Dead Musicians’ Society” and the DVDs of “Strictly Classical”, “Classical Twist” and “Classically Yours”. As an orchestra conductor, he was the music director of the Lam Woo Orchestra and Winter Lake Orchestra. As a pianist. Dr. Chong has won the Yamaha Piano Competition. As a researcher, his research has been published in publications such as Tirai Panggung and International Journal of Academic Research and Reflection. He has held the LESTARI Research Grant and SDG Research Grant.
Dr. Chong is an Associate Professor at Universiti Teknologi MARA. Previously, he was the coordinator of the music department at Universiti Malaya and has also been on the faculty of Polk College in USA. At University Teknologi MARA, he helped establish the Tunku Zain Piano Trio Competition. Dr. Chong has been with the String Faculty at Ann Perreau’s since 2004.
